Chris Abbott

A reader recently asked me what Spring trends I foresee for 2010.

Here’s what I anticipate:

1 – Predominate colors: According to Anna Wintour of Vogue, Navy is stronger than ever, as is deep violet, turquoise in all hues, citrus (yellow/green), pink and bright orange. Black and white are always welcome staples that multiply your wardrobe options.

2 – Handbags: Eel skin has returned in bright and colorful handbags and small accessories. Python, crocodile or croc-embossed leather as well as mixed leathers will shine as important fashion pieces. I’m seeing snakeskin dyed in multiple colors that are absolutely breathtaking.

3 – Animal prints: Think of animal prints in non-traditional color combinations for a fresh approach. They are still strong and have evolved as a fashion staple.

4 – Side draping, asymmetrical detailing in tops, dresses and skirts: It’s dramatic and figure-friendly. Great arms demand a one-shouldered blouse or knit top. For a more modest effect, seek an asymmetrical hemline or front-draped blouse.

5 – Belts: Chain belts with large loops, web belts with leather accents and exotic skins in bright colors create a new excitement. Also look for double-wrapped belts.

6 – Jackets: The freshest approach is a shorter, fitted blazer mixing coordinated fabrics. Pair it with a great pair of pants or a simple pencil skirt. Short and shiny taffeta jackets are still popular with a distinctive long scarf. Look for long cardigan sweaters with elongated front detailing as well as classic styling.

7 – Pants: Cropped below the knee with an oversized cuff, as well as the long “short” hitting at mid-knee. Ankle-length pants are still popular, both in a slim cut as well as a very full leg styles. Palazzo pants are returning and create a fresh look – especially with white.

8 – Prints: Animal prints with white backgrounds, polka dots, high-contrast prints plus softer, watercolor prints will be prevalent. Batik-inspired prints become more important going forward and feature a soft earthiness in their colorations.

9 – Silhouettes: Jackets are mostly fitted for Spring/Summer 2010, with the exception of boyfriend blazers and an occasional swing jacket. The pencil slim skirt is a classic. Plus, look for fuller, dirndl-inspired skirts. A-line skirts in distinctive prints are perfect for our hot weather months.

10 – Accessories: Turquoise is extremely important, so bring out all of your favorite ethnic pieces. Polished resin necklaces and bracelets are very popular, especially when done in multi-color combinations. Oversized chains are very strong in bracelets and necklaces, as well as the “statement” cuff bracelet, oftentimes done with one large stone or a group of stones.
